Election Day

No, this is not a political post. I assume, perhaps wrongly, that people do their research and don’t believe everything they hear or read. I know, it’s a pipe dream.

But the thing I remember most about election days are from when I was a kid. I grew up in a very small rural town. Every first tuesday in November was a special day at school. We got to eat IN the classroom where food was never allowed. It gave me the feeling of being a rebel that wasn’t going to be in trouble.

My elementary school cafeteria was also the gymnasium and the auditorium. We had these ingenious cafeteria tables that folded flat into the wall. I was always awed with the design. On election day, it doubled as the voting place. So us kids got a sack lunch, instead of the trays, to take back to our classroom while the grownups voted for our futures.

Was it really that exciting to eat in the classroom? No, but it was different. And when you live in a small town, you’ll take anything to add a little excitement.
