Today is my Mom’s birthday. She left us 10 years ago. I had the privilege of taking care of her in her final months. It wasn’t always easy. But, she’s the reason I’m the strong woman that I am. Did we butt heads? Um….. yeah, a lot!
I guess as we get older we look back on our lives. I’ve always said I had a good childhood. It actually wasn’t that great. We were broke, my brother died when I was a teen, my dad died before my second child was born, I was the youngest and my siblings picked on me mercilessly. But I do know it was a lot better than many other people’s lives… even those with money.
But the reason I always say it was a good childhood is because I know I was loved by my parents, they were fair and just, and did the best they could. My mom even got a degree in criminal justice in her 40’s.
Mom was VERY matter of fact. She had no filters and was hardly politically correct. Her compliments were usually backhanded. But she had a sense of humor as well. One time when the visiting nurse was going through all the usual questions and asked “Do you have any pain?” and Mom replied, “Only when Lexi hits me?” I turned to look at her incredulously and she said “Gotcha!” Thankfully the nurses knew she was kidding. LOL
But every night when I helped her get into bed, she’d hold my hand and say, “I love you. Thank you for being here.”
I love you too, Mom. ♥
